M., left at J.30 lor Lucknow and arrived at 4 P.M. . i i c today the 48th day of our jout- ney. Our welcome was a most cordial one But for an ambig- uity in our telegram from Calcut- ta the entire fore of the two M.E. colleges, and Bishop Warne, would have met us at the train, but as we were not expected un til 6:30 instead of 4 no one met us. We bad no difficulty, how ever, in finding our way. Some very kind and thoughtful friends in Illinois had a corres pondence shower awaiting us. We read our letters and cards almost before we sat down. We hope to find time fora fitting response. In Calcutta our few hours were spent with the Methodists. From the high roof garden of Rev. Lees’ school I had a bird’s eye view of the city. Six of the seven Lees children were killed in a landslide in India and the parents and their friends have erected a magnificent orphanage as a memorial. Here we had heathenism thrown into our faces when Mrs. Lees brought the lat est baby for us to see. Its moth er is twelve years old. The child is legitimate in that its parents were legally married, al though cohabitation is illegal be fore a wife is fourteen years of age. Another baby that had been rescued from a garbage heap was shown to us. Mrs. Lees asked a policeman why he almost always brought her girls instead of boys. He told her that the keepers of houses of ill fame kept regular nurseries in which they reared the girl babies that they had bougnt. On the way from Calcutta we saw camels, elephants, bullocks and other natives at work. The ploughing with bullocks and a wooden plow and the threshing rice with a Hail looked very Bib lical. So did the people carrying tilings on their heads and so did the Oriental costumes. Many, many things crowd for utterance, but as our long jour ney is over I may properly close my journal here. We are well and much needed work lies at our hand so I find myself happy. ; A r t h u r C.
